What is trending in laser technology in dermatology?
Aesthetic medicine is evolving at a fast pace. Better technologies, safer treatments, more efficient systmes are constantly being generated. Although most modalities and energy based systems remain the same, the better make and updation of laser systems let us improve on results with better settings and higher energies that are safe and effective.
- light based energy systems generating LED therapies and lymphatic drainage seem to be everywhere. Blue light is typically used to treat acne prone skin and red light is used to treat conditions relating to anti aging
- Cryolipolysis systems use sub zero temperatures to destroy fat and these are being combined with radio frequency, lymphatic drainage or radial pulse technology to help with skin tightening
- Pigment lasers with Q switch technology are using ultra low wavelengths to penetrate tissues better. Pico second lasers are being used to destroy further smaller pigment particles into minute particles so they can get eliminated.
- Laser hair removal technology remains the same with diode with or without the addition of other modalities such as Radio frequency, alexandrite etc but larger hand pieces and hand enable us to do full body treatment quickly and hand piece tips allow us to treat hard to reach places such as under eye area
- Focused ultrasound energy systems allows us to visualize tissue planes whilst delivering energy so that the heating takes place in the right plane which allows for collagen stimulation and lifting effect. Focused Ultrasound energy s being used not only in the face for non surgical face lift but also in areas of the body that need toning and lifting such as the neck, décolletage, knees, inner arms, thigh, abdomen etc.

Is India on par with the West in terms of using laser devices?
India is very much on par with the western world but new technologies take some time to come into the Indian market. Often a treatment modality has been trending for quite a few years before it is followed suit in India. This is because of the availability of the technology, permisssions and regulations. Also most active research in these fields are being carried on in the west before the treatment modality is introduced everywhere.

What are the shortcomings of laser treatments?
Laser treatments need to be effective but also safe for them to be successful in a certain market. In India being people of colour and since dark colored skin tends to have problems with lasers, one needs to be careful with using low energy settings, pre treatment protocols to avoid hyperpigmentation, avoiding sun exposure and choosing the right kind of client for treatment. Aggressive treatments are not suggested and one must be careful when investing in lasers to go with a reputed company and brand that invests lot of money in research, training and in supporting the medical staff.
