Monsoon season brings its own challenges with rains and increased humidity in the air. If we recognize the needs the skin has in this season we will be able to understand how to protect it from the ill effects and enjoy the season

The humidity levels and increased moisture content in the air can spell disaster in 2 ways mainly. Sweat and humidity can clog pores and cause acne breakouts. Excessive moisture can lead to skin nfections which will see a raise in this season.

6 hacks to keep skin infections at bay:

  1. swap your regular moisturizer for a lightweight serum or lotion which will not clog pores. Serums with Hyaluronic acid are best suited for oily skin as they do not block pores. Even dry skin people who regularly use thicker moisturising creams may need to swap their moisturizer with a serum or a water based lotion. This will help with acne breakouts.
  2. If you get drenched in the rain, wash and wipe away excess water. Moisture retained in the skin folds like between toes, in the groin and armpits etc is breeding ground for yeast and fungal infections. If you have wet socks, remove them and dry them out before wearing. Keep yourself dry in all areas
  3. Keep proper waste disposal systems at home. Food should be kept covered to avoid infestations. Drink boiled and cooled water. Drainage systems should be covered . Use moisquito nets, patches, repellents etc
  4. Whilst in public spaces like airplanes, trains, buses, cover your nose if facing the window and carry a hand sanitizer. Children should be taught to wash hands and feet well before sitting down to eat. Avoid sending them in playgroups where there are sick children. Always sneeze into a hand tissue and cover your nose and mouth whilst sneezing in public.
  5. Avoid eating outside and rinse your vegetables and fruit well with vinegar diluted with water to wash away germs and fertilisers
  6. Avoid public pools in monsoon and avoid sharing towels and undergarments. Wash towels everyday.

If you have bronchial issues , asthma or are above 60 years of age, check with your doctor if you can have your annual flu vaccine which will help reduce intensity and duration of flu illness if you do acquire it. All these measures will help to a certain extent to keeping infections at bay in Monsoon.
